🏁 How to Prepare Your Bike for the Track: A Complete Pre-Race Checklist
Heading out to a South Florida track day is one of the most exciting ways to push your motorcycle—and yourself—to the limit. But before you roll onto the grid, your bike needs a thorough inspection and preparation. Skipping this step can mean mechanical failures, safety risks, or even getting turned away at tech inspection.
At Top Pro Motorsports, we help riders get their machines race-ready with expert service and advice. Here’s your complete pre-race checklist to prepare your motorcycle for the track and keep your day running smooth.
✅ 1. Tires and Wheels
Check tire tread and condition. Your tires should be in excellent shape—no cords showing, no flat spots, and plenty of life left.
-
Set proper tire pressures. Track pressures are typically lower than street settings. Check with your tire manufacturer or track coach.
-
Inspect wheel bearings and rims. Make sure wheels spin smoothly and there are no cracks or dents.
✅ 2. Brakes
Your brakes take more abuse on the track than anywhere else.
-
Pads: Inspect and replace if less than 50% thickness remains.
-
Fluid: Flush old brake fluid and replace it with fresh, high-temp DOT 4 fluid.
-
Lines: Check for leaks or cracks, especially if you have rubber lines. Consider upgrading to braided stainless steel for better feel.
✅ 3. Fluids and Oil
Fresh fluids are non-negotiable.
-
Oil change: Do this before every event.
-
Coolant: Most tracks require you to remove ethylene glycol coolant and run distilled water with a coolant additive like Water Wetter.
-
Leaks: No drips or leaks allowed—fix them before inspection.
✅ 4. Chain and Sprockets
A worn chain can ruin your day—and your engine.
-
Inspect chain tension. Adjust to spec with about an inch of slack.
-
Lubricate thoroughly.
-
Check sprockets for wear or hooked teeth.
✅ 5. Controls and Cables
You need smooth, predictable control inputs.
-
Throttle: Snaps back cleanly without sticking.
-
Clutch and brake levers: Operate smoothly.
-
Cables: No frays or excessive play.
✅ 6. Suspension and Steering
Your suspension setup affects every corner you take.
-
Check fork seals for leaks.
-
Set preload, compression, and rebound damping.
-
Steering head bearings: No notches or play.
-
Sag adjustment: Have a pro help you set rider sag for your weight.
✅ 7. Safety Wiring and Fasteners
Many tracks require safety wiring critical bolts.
-
Oil drain bolt and filler cap
-
Oil filter
-
Brake caliper bolts
Double-check all fasteners are torqued to spec.
✅ 8. Battery and Electrical
You don’t want electrical issues ruining your session.
-
Battery fully charged and terminals tight
-
No frayed wires
-
Kill switch functioning properly
✅ 9. Bodywork and Glass
Remove or tape anything that can shatter.
-
Mirrors removed
-
Lights taped or removed
-
License plate removed
✅ 10. Rider Gear
Don’t forget your own protection.
-
Helmet (DOT/Snell)
-
One-piece suit
-
Gloves, boots, back protector
-
Hydration and snacks
